There are many reasons why your computer won't start or boot into the Windows operating system. If your computer does not start or does not start, you will see or hear symptoms that indicate the general cause of the problem. If you're not sure what the problem is, seeDiscuss how to troubleshoot when your computer won't start or doesn't start up properly.

Startup Symptom: When booting up or booting up, the computer may display an error message on a black screen

Use this document if your LEDs are on, you hear the sound of a fan or hard drive spinning, but when you press the power button on your laptop, you get an error message on a black screen.

This problem can be caused by an error in the instructions sent from the BIOS to a hardware component (for example, keyboard errors) or by an incompatible device driver. Typically, these types of issues can be resolved by clearing the error message and then installing updated firmware for the critical component.

DO THIS FIRST: Perform a hard reset

If your computer suddenly stops booting properly, here's what to dodo a hard resetas the first procedure.

  1. Startall peripheral devices and remove all USB devices and media cards. You want to test the computer, not the accessories!

  2. StartAC adapter, remove the battery, and thenHold down the power button for at least 15 seconds..
